SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
STATEMENT OF ELIGIBILITY
- Applicants must be a dependent of someone who has been seriously or fatally injured as a result of a work-related accident or occupational disease.
- The death or injury/illness must have occurred as a result of work activities performed for a South Carolina employer.
- The applicant must be a resident of South Carolina.
- Benefits must be paid under the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act, as a result of the work-related injury, occupational disease, or death suffered by the person upon whom the applicant is dependent.
- The injury or death must have resulted in a substantial decline in the family’s income.
- Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 25.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a trade/vocational school; industrial/commercial training; junior college/community college; undergraduate program at a college; or a graduate program at a college.
DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY
Duration of eligibility is the time period in which scholarship(s) will be renewed if all scholarship terms have been met each semester. The extent of your scholarship is a maximum of four years or a total of eight semesters. If your scholarship has been revoked during the period of eligibility due to the failure to meet one or more of the terms of the scholarship agreement, your scholarship duration of eligibility will not be extended.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Applicants must submit the scholarship application form and all supporting documents.
Applications must be submitted one month before the beginning of the semester (i.e. Spring semester deadline is December 30th; Fall semester deadline is July 10th).
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the student’s need and the funds available to Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc. The maximum scholarship award is $3,000 per semester.
Scholarships may be used to pay tuition/fees; books; and room and board.
Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc. scholarships are paid only after a student has applied and been awarded for all other eligible financial aid. If tuition/fees, books, and room and board are paid 100% by other types of financial aid, the student will not be eligible for a scholarship through Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc.
The number of scholarships to be awarded per school year shall be determined by the Board of Directors of Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc.
REQUIRED SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS
New Applicants: Completed application; high school transcript or college transcript for last semester attended; financial aid applications and responses (including FAFSA and SAR); Form 12A, Order or letter from doctor regarding injury; death certificate (if applicable); and copy of last two years tax returns of person upon whom the applicant is dependent.
Returning Applicants: Completed application; transcript for last semester; letter from financial aid office listing all financial awarded; itemized bill for tuition and books.
Cumulative GPA: New applicants must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA to apply. Returning students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 each semester. Failure to maintain the minimum cumulative GPA requirement will result in one of the following actions:
Revocation: In the event your cumulative GPA is more than 0.5 below the minimum GPA required, your scholarship will be revoked. Once your cumulative GPA requirement is met, you may apply for reinstatement of your scholarship.
Probation: In the event your cumulative GPA falls within 0.5 of the minimum GPA required, your scholarship will not be revoked, but you will be placed on scholarship probation during the next semester. If by the end of the probationary period your required cumulative GPA has not been met, your scholarship will be revoked. Once your cumulative GPA requirement is met, you may apply for reinstatement of your scholarship.
Withdrawal from Classes: In addition to contacting your academic advisor when withdrawing from courses for the semester, you must also contact the Executive Director of Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc. If you do not withdraw from classes timely and Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc. is not refunded 100% by your school, it will be your responsibility to reimburse Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc. the full amount owed.
PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships awards are paid directly to the school. No checks will be paid to the student, including reimbursement for books or otherwise.
All recipients are required to sign a Scholarship Acceptance Form agreeing to the terms of the scholarship. The signed Scholarship Acceptance Form must be received by the Executive Director of Kids’ Chance of South Carolina, Inc. before any award is paid. Failure to return the signed Scholarship Acceptance Form will result in the scholarship being revoked.
